Q: How are these dolls made?
A: Each doll or figure is handmade using special felting needles to form and join pieces of loose dyed wool into unique dimensional dolls and figures. No thread is used in the process. Instead the needle is used to poke the fibers of the wool into each other. Once the wool is felted together it will not fall apart.
Q: How longs does each doll take?
A: Larger and complex figures may be formed with more than a million individual needle pokes. Simple figures and accessories can be completed in less than an hour. Larger dolls can take weeks to complete. (You can only poke for so long!)
Q: What are the dolls made of?
A: Each doll or figure is primarily constructed of 100% lambs wool imported from around the world. Some have internal forms or frameworks to make them more durable. A few, like the wizards also have wooden or jeweled staffs or wands.
Q: Where I can buy the wool?
A: We love making dolls and figures and hope to sell you finished items, but maybe you would like to try needle felting too. We have kits available for simple dolls, and can put together kits and supplies for other projects too on request. It’s not as easy as it might look, but it is fun and rewarding.
By the way, even after years and years of needle felting, we still poke our own fingers! Be Careful!
Q: How do I keep my dolls clean?
A: Light soil can be gently brushed off the surface. We can often repair a more heavily damaged doll if you send it back to us.
Q: Are these dolls appropriate for young children?
A: Like any textile product, the dolls can be damaged by young children. The wool can be pulled apart intentionally, sometimes revealing pipe cleaners or wire used in their construction. Young children should not handle the dolls without supervision.
The dolls can be handled and played with. These figures are often made by children and families in Waldorf Schools and are intended to be handmade toys as well as keepsake figures. With love and care they will last a lifetime.
